A correspondence is a kind of love affair.
JANET MALCOLM
Forgive the second email intrusion this week—this is a one-off I promise. Today I am launching Project Postcard on Isa Catto’s Subscriber Chat.
Over the years I have accumulated flat file drawers full of unfinished paintings, forgotten projects, and ephemera. I need to clear space in the studio, and in my head, so I decided to cut them down to postcard size and re-work them.
Why postcards?
I have been hearing from many lovely people from all corners of the globe cheering me on in my cancer journey. I want to say thank you with art.
For now, I’ve returned to my studio in small stretches, so working small is a bit more manageable.
After giving in to emails, DMs, and texts as my principal method of correspondence, I want to give the post office a bit of love again.
I’ve spent years making art for an agenda — a project, a show, a design, or a commission and now it’s time to play.
I love mail art and its mission to make art more accessible and less precious. Check out Ray Johnson’s and May Wilson's contributions to the movement,
Here’s where you come in. I will post available postcards on the chat thread starting today. If you want a postcard, we will send you a postcard.
Name the Postcard on the Chat thread.
Please email us your address at hello@isacattostudio.com
The rest is up to us and USPS.
We will not use your address for anything other than dropping you a postcard. Cross our hearts and all that. Then, barring post office snafus, your postcard will be in your hands. Everything is first come first serve so we will let you know in the thread if the postcard is already claimed.
For the time being, these postcards are free. If demand soars, then I may upgrade the chat to paid, (if I can figure out how) since these do take time.
If you feel inspired, please join me and make your own postcards. I would love to see them or upload the received postcards (without showing your address) —who doesn’t like a great cancellation stamp?
See you on Chat…
How to get started
Download the app by clicking this link or the button below. Substack Chat is now available on both iOS and Android.
Open the app and tap the Chat icon. It looks like two bubbles in the bottom bar, and you’ll see a row for my chat inside.
That’s it! Jump into my thread to say hi, and if you have any issues, check out Substack’s FAQ.
