Thank you, Isa, for sharing your home and inspirations. An extended period of sitting around healing from surgery over Christmas led me to fall in love with my home again and to revisit some spaces I used to sit in to read. I see where I’ve travelled and who I love in every room and I always thank my house for supporting me and giving me safe harbour over the years.

I am so sorry to hear that Emma! I hope your healing was swift. There is nothing like being homebound to remind you of this blessing of space and sanctuary!

Your writing makes me feel like I just had a wonderful visit with you....love, love seeing again your magical spaces. Your home always felt almost mystical to me...love every single corner of it...inside and out.

I am going now to find things to move and change around.....thanks for the inspiration.

Isa, no one could read your beautiful piece without both looking lovingly at their own home and wondering what other magic might be waiting to join. Thank you!

Books are a balm. I’m also reading India Knight’s HOME and it’s a delicious walk through love and life. Thanks for sharing your beautiful space. xo

Your whole living environment house and garden is unforgettable. So warm and rich with texture, color and pattern all interacting with your garden and the land around.

Such a beautiful reflection, Isa. So enjoy your writing (and bonus book rec.) Sharing the feeling that the magic of home is often in the smallest places and items suffused with memory and love. (Writing this as I look at our beloved dog splayed in a puddle of sunshine on the slouchy couch which I don't think I will ever have the heart to remove from our kitchen. Already dreaming of getting his portrait done so we forever have that face in that place...)

The book is so worth it Mary. And from one dog fanatic to another — our friend Bobby is an amazing portraitist. His link is in the caption. Thanks for reading — some flee their homes after loss but for me it holds such comfort.

Fellow home body here who is envious of your ability to fashion such an intensely personal and serene space! Love this piece!

My mom led the way! And I have no doubt your space is a marvel -- and filled with flowers!

looking for a book to read and take me "away." thank you---just found one! after reading your essay what came to mind is that saying---a house is not a home.

It’s a great wintering read. And yes a house is so much more! Thanks for reading!

With the frenetic energy which surrounded us at the Bakery for almost 30 years, our home and gardens also became our sanctuary. The still white of long winters gave me a longing for making every room a different color but still have a calmness. My mother’s and daughter’s and friends’ Art covers every wall. Our homes are very different but fulfill similar human needs. Totally enjoy your descriptive writing, Isa. Thank you.

I cannot imagine how overwhelming those days for you both. And of course you are a renowned gardener in our community and beyond. All homes should be different! So good to see you in the PO the other day.

Love this story Isa, your beautiful and thoughtful home, and especially seeing your parents. In my small home I am surrounded with my mom's artwork, it keeps her in my mind and heart every day. Love is all we need.

Jan! Liz (from the Ranch) and I were just singing your praises Thursday. I hope you heard us! I hope you are coming back this year and we can finally get together.

You have inspired me. I just started furnishing our house with our own prints, art, and finds. You’re giving me permission expand my collection and imagination. Thank you!

Diane, I’m glad and thank you. If you need further inspiration definitely pick up Knight’s book — it’s all about giving yourself permission with some guideposts!

Your photos and home are beautiful, unique. Your mom was gorgeous, she looks like a 60’s model. And now I need to go find some wallpaper for my bathroom which has needed it for quite some time. Wondering if the hubby will approve something bright ? Thanks for the inspiration.

Teresa! Thanks for all your great comments. Mom was stunning — kind of that old Hollywood beauty so true — I forgot to embed the name of the company but here it is: https://www.namarococo.com/. I love colorful, whimsical bathrooms — I mean it is an oft visited destination after all. One woman upon entering our pink domain said “I love this wallpaper but my decorator would NEVER let me do this.” I did tell her that it was her house after all….but I doubt she stirred those waters. Hope you prevail!

Thanks for the company link. My mom was quite stunning too, more like the Italian beauties of the 40/50’s (she was born there). We just celebrated her 95th birthday. Grazie mille

This is so beautifully written. I couldn’t agree more. For example, I love my parent’s old books — filled with notes and underlined poems — just like that cutting board. They all leave the right kind of footprint, clues to who they were and what they gave you. Thanks for commenting!
